Stephen
Minister Job Description
Purpose
The Stephen Minister is committed to providing a one-to-one caring
ministry to persons in need of Christian support (e.g. in times
of loneliness, of becoming a new parent, of illness or hospitalization,
of grief or other crisis situations).
Accountability
Stephen Ministers are directly accountable to the Stephen Leaders.
The Stephen Leaders at White Plains are accountable to the ministers
and the congregation of White Plains UMC. As caregivers, we are
all accountable to God, the true Cure-Giver and the source of our
strength to minister.
Responsibilities
Attend and give priority to the 50 hours of training, as well
as 2 training retreats. Study all the materials used in the course,
including books and articles.
Participate in ongoing supervision and continuing education
twice a month for the balance of the 24-month commitment (1st
and 3rd Tuesdays). This is necessary even if you are not currently
assigned to a care giving relationship.
Be available for service as a Stephen Minister (averaging 10-12
hours per month) for 18 months following the completion of training.
Respond promptly to referrals made by Stephen Leader.
Seek to establish a one-to-one caring relationship with your
Care Receiver following such a referral. Visitation will normally
be on a weekly basis. Each Stephen Minister will have only one
Care Receiver at a time.
Maintain confidentiality at all times by not discussing Care
Receivers by name or implication.
Be supportive of and participate in Stephen Ministry functions
(Supervision, Sanctuary ministry, workshops, Ministry Fair, Retreats,
etc.)
Set aside time on a regular basis for Bible reading and prayer.
Pray especially for care receivers, other Stephen Ministers, Stephen
Leaders, and the Church.
